Then and Now #22 - Ritz Theater
๐The Ritz Theater ๐ญ , once standing at 500 Washington Street, was originally constructed in 1895 ๐๏ธ as a Masonic Temple. Previously the site had been home to a church built in the 1850s ๐. The church โช and property were sold in the 1890s ๐ฐ and changed hands several times ๐, housing various businesses ๐ช, before eventually ending up with the local Masons โ๏ธ. After the new building was constructed, the Masons continued to lease space within it to businesses ๐งพ. The Ritz Theater ๐ฌ moved in during the 1930s until the 1950s ๐ฐ๏ธ. Between the 1950sโ70s the building sat vacant ๐ธ๏ธ, and throughout the โ80s and early โ90s it was occasionally occupied ๐งโโ๏ธ but struggled to attract a permanent business ๐. In 1996, the now dilapidated building was demolished ๐ฅ. The lot has since become a small pocket park ๐ฟ with a stone commemorating the buildings formerly on the site ๐ชจ.
