Seneca Sampler Quilt Mural: A Community Story Painted in Color

In the summer of 2022, an idea rooted in creativity, community, and local pride quite literally came to life on a downtown wall.

On July 20, 2022, the Seneca Area Chamber and Downtown Impact proudly announced that the Seneca Sampler Quilt Mural Project had been awarded a grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce through the Office of Rural Prosperity. The grant recognized the power of public art in strengthening rural communities and celebrating local stories. We could not have been more excited.

What Is a Sampler Quilt Mural?

A sampler quilt is a traditional quilting style where no block is repeated. Each square tells its own story while still being part of a larger, connected design. That idea became the inspiration for a large-scale painted mural on the west-facing exterior wall of Seneca Variety in downtown Seneca.

Rather than a single artist designing every detail, this mural invited the community to help shape it.

Community-Created Quilt Blocks

From the start, the Seneca Sampler Quilt Mural was designed to be a true community project. Residents were invited to submit original quilt block designs, each one reflecting a personal style, memory, or connection to Seneca. Every block was unique, just like a traditional sampler quilt, and together they formed a colorful visual story of the people who call this place home.

By opening the design process to the public, the mural became more than a single artist’s vision. It became a shared creative effort that allowed many voices and perspectives to be represented on one downtown wall.

From Blank Wall to Painted Canvas

By September 26, 2022, the project officially moved from concept to reality. Primer went up on the wall, marking the first visible step in transforming the space. Over the following weeks, passersby could watch the mural slowly take shape.

During Seneca’s Oktoberfest Craft Show on October 10, 2022, the mural became a form of live performance art as paintbrushes were flying and progress was made in real time. It was one more way the project stayed interactive and visible while downtown was buzzing with activity.

By November 2022, the Seneca Sampler Quilt Mural was complete.

Meet the Artist Behind the Vision

The mural was led by local artist Ellie Haynie, who was born and raised in Seneca. Ellie serves as the art teacher at Nemaha Central High School and is an officer with the Northeast Kansas Arts Foundation. Sharing her love of fine and performing arts has always been at the heart of her work.

This mural was especially meaningful because the original idea came from Ellie herself. Through collaboration with the building owner and the Executive Director of Seneca Downtown Impact, that initial spark grew into a full-scale public art project that now stands as a permanent piece of downtown Seneca.

More Than a Mural

Funded in part by the Kansas Department of Commerce and the Office of Rural Prosperity, the Seneca Sampler Quilt Mural is more than paint on a wall. It is a visual record of shared memories, local creativity, and what can happen when a community comes together to tell its story.

It is a reminder that in rural Kansas, art matters. Community matters. And sometimes the best stories are the ones we build together.
