What is Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park?

The park is more than a campground. It’s a place where history, culture, and the great outdoors come together. The park features:

    • A 21-site campground with both electric and basic options

    • An 18-acre fishing lake with canoe and kayak rentals

    • The Missouri’s American Indian Cultural Center, highlighting Native American art and history, including Van Meter heritage

      • The historic Walter House, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, available for events and gatherings

      With so much to offer, it’s the perfect spot for families, history buffs, and anyone who loves spending time outdoors.

      Why They Do What They Do

      When asked what motivates him, Daniel said:

      “I enjoy seeing people enjoying my park. Nothing really puts a smile on my face like seeing the campground full of families, fires going, kids running around — just people out enjoying the park. That’s what drives me every day.”

      His passion for creating a welcoming and lively environment is at the heart of everything the team does.

      What More People Should Know

      Many people don’t realize just how unique Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park is or even that it exists. It's a hidden gem down a dead-end blacktop road in the middle of cornfields.

      Even after 20 years with Missouri State Parks, Daniel hadn’t heard of the park before taking the position. Now, he’s committed to spreading the word so more people can enjoy it.


      Local Matters

      Supporting local is a core value for Daniel. He put it best:

      “If we don’t rely on our local communities and local businesses, then that’s how towns die. You’ve got to support the town if you want to have it.”

      By working with Marshall Tourism, Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park is tapping into new ways to connect with locals and visitors alike, amplifying their story, and building lasting connections.

      There’s always something happening at the park! Upcoming highlights include:

      • Saturday Night Campground Programs – running through Labor Day

      • Annual Halloween Event – October 18 – Haunted Hike, trick-or-treating, campsite decorating, and more
