Building on Acreage? CAL Construction Shares What to Know First
Dreaming of a home in the country? Our member CAL Construction, a family-owned custom home builder right here in Paola, just published a helpful guide for anyone thinking about building on acreage in Kansas.
Their October 1 post walks through the questions that often surprise first-time land buyers:
Septic: Soil conditions and county rules decide what's allowed, and requirements differ between Miami, Johnson and Franklin counties.
Water: Confirm rural water is truly available at your building site, or plan ahead for a well and its permits.
Power and internet: Running electric service from the road can add up, and internet should be checked at the actual address, not just on a coverage map.
Site work: Driveways, culverts, grading and drainage all affect your budget.
Their biggest tip? Bring a builder in early, before you commit to a piece of land. A lower list price can end up costing more once utilities and site work are added in.
It's exactly the kind of practical, local know-how we love to see from our members. Read the full guide at buildwithcal.com/blog, and contact CAL Construction at 913-259-5034 to talk through your land and plans.
