While those cities have long been known for their music scenes, there is something incredibly special, tight-knit, and vibrant happening right here in Paola. We may be a small town, but our community’s heartbeat is driven by a massive rhythm. From a charming historic theater to lakeside views, to our downtown Square, Paola is packing a serious punch when it comes to incredible, year-round live music.

What makes our music scene truly unique isn't just the sheer volume of talent passing through---and yes, there is A LOT of amazing talent putting Paola on its radar—it’s that every single beat is crafted with family in mind. If you are looking for top-tier entertainment that you can enjoy with your kids, friends, and neighbors, you don't need to drive 45 minutes out of town. The ultimate melody is right here in our own backyard.

Here is a look at how music is taking over Paola this year:

1. A Red, White, and Blue Rhythm: 250th Independence Day Celebration

We are kicking off July with a massive bang for our historic 250th Independence Day Celebration at Miola Lake on Friday, July 3rd—and almost everything you see this year is brand new! We are completely elevating the experience with a newly added sand volleyball tournament, yard games, and a vendor/food truck fair, plus a spectacular show featuring over 500 more firework shells than ever before.

Plus, we are introducing a live DJ--DJ Gem--to provide the ultimate family-friendly soundtrack for the night! From 5:00 to 10:00 PM, the DJ will be keeping the energy high, playing great tunes, and setting the perfect vibe leading up to the big show at dusk. Pack your lawn chairs and bring the whole family down to experience a completely reinvented, music-filled holiday by the lake!

2. Music & The Market: Your Saturday Night Tradition

There is nothing quite like a summer evening on the square. Music & The Market 2026 is bringing a phenomenal lineup of free, family-friendly concerts to downtown Paola on most Saturday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

• July 11th: Sylvia Dawn (Country, Christian, Rock ‘n Roll)

• July 18th: Cole Fired (Country, Bluegrass, Banjo)

• August 1st: Heartland Revival Trio (Classic Country & Classic Rock)

• August 8th: Ukulele Ladies (Hawaiian & Beach themed—don’t forget to dress Hawaiian!)

• August 15th & 22nd: Bluegrass and Americana from Wildwood Boys and Maybelles.

• September 12th, 19th, & 26th: Rounding out the fall with Jazz, Blues, and Country from Brian Ruskin, John Paul Drumm & Bill Dye, and the Blue River Band.

Just grab your lawn chairs, pick up some fresh local finds, and enjoy the tunes!

3. The 37th Annual Paola Roots Festival

Mark your calendars for Friday, August 28th and Saturday, August 29th when Paola Park Square transforms for our signature musical event. Featuring national and regional powerhouses like Albert Cummings, Bywater Call, Taylor Hunnicutt, Johnny Mullenax, and Nick Schnebelen, the Roots Festival brings world-class blues, bluegrass, and rock directly to us. Best of all? Kids 12 and under are completely free, making this an affordable, weekend-long family tradition.

4. Schwartz Family Theater at Paola Community Center 

The music doesn’t stop when summer ends. The historic Schwartz Family Theater is seeing a lot of musical action at the Paola Community Center. Director Brooks Damron is consistently bringing top-tier, intimate live music events to their stage, like the upcoming South American music showcase with Kimsa on July 17th. Amado and his band earned themselves a standing ovation with their powerful and emotional tunes last time they were in town. You don't want to miss it! Most recently, Jess Ray brought in people from Kansas City, Lawrence, Joplin, Springfield, and someone even drove 6 hours to see her play! We love knowing that our visitors ate at some of our restaurants, stopped at our gas stations, and may have done a did a little sight-seeing ahead of time. Coming up in August, Sean of the South will be strumming his heart out to many of his biggest fans. And that's not all--there are plenty of fantastic shows lining up for the fall and winter, it keeps great entertainment going all year long.

5. Lakeside Melodies: Jayhawk Marina on Hillsdale Lake

We are thrilled to see Jayhawk Marina adding live music to their summer lineup! They are turning up the fun on the water all July long, including a live music performance by Bear Gardner on Saturday, July 4th from 2:00 to 5:00 PM (right after the RC boat races!). But the music is just the beginning. Did you know you can turn a concert day into a complete family staycation? Jayhawk Marina offers incredible dock cabin rentals right on the water, alongside boat rentals, a fully stocked store, and even an indoor fishing dock. It’s the ultimate way to blend family-friendly tunes with lake life.
