The mission of Downtown Blue Springs is to engage in historic preservation, revitalization activities, and education; by encouraging the cooperation of downtown merchants, property owners, residents and partners, creating a positive image of downtown, strengthening the economic base, and providing design education to improve the appearance and vitality of the downtown area.
Our vision is a healthy, vibrant downtown, creating a great city in which to live, work, shop, and play for the benefit of all residents and businesses in Blue Springs.
The history of Downtown Blue Springs, Missouri, is a testament to community resilience and revitalization. Originally centered around a natural spring that attracted early settlers, the area evolved into a bustling downtown with the arrival of the Chicago and Alton Railroad in the late 19th century. Over time, however, the downtown area faced challenges such as economic decline and urban sprawl.
In response, the "Downtown Alive!" initiative was launched to breathe new life into the historic district. This grassroots effort brought together downtown merchants, city officials, the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce, the Blue Springs Business Association, and the Historical Society. Their collective vision aimed at historic preservation, economic development, and community engagement. One notable project was "Remnants Restored," which featured public art installations made from reclaimed materials like steel from the old water tower and aluminum from America's Community Bank.
In 2011, Downtown Blue Springs Main Street, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established to further these efforts. The organization engages in historic preservation, revitalization activities, and education, working to create a vibrant downtown where residents can live, work, shop, and play.
The success of these initiatives led to Downtown Blue Springs becoming a Missouri Associate Main Street Program in 2015, bringing the community closer to national accreditation. Today, the area hosts various events, including car cruises, farmers markets, and public art exhibitions, reflecting its transformation into a thriving cultural and economic hub.
